Miri’s a Sad Panda

See?

School started again on Monday the 25th and I’m already drowning in work.  I always take two classes – if one of my classes is reading-intensive I can handle it…but…BOTH my classes are requiring stupid amounts of reading AND writing.  So you won’t be hearing much from me for the next 10 weeks.

Tomorrow is Emerald Dream’s Dueling Day – and I haven’t had time to come up with a prize so LOL, it’s just going to be 100g.   Hmmm I should go find a craftable crown type of thingie.  Or maybe an Admiral’s Hat.  I can make those…

*sigh*

To those who meebo’ed me…

1) Sorry, I can’t read gibberish.  And yes it works.

2) Yes you can avoid the shadowbolts – you can use the pillar to break his line of sight to you, but not you to him – I’m not familiar with this tactic though, so I can’t give you more details. :(

Mr. Pinchy Wish #2

Posted by Miriella on 19 June 2007

Got me a Benevolent Mr. Pinchy!  I made my wish in Shattrath and didn’t bother to try to go out and fight anything to see how good he was in combat…he’s huge!

Busy this week trying to gather up mats for Emerald Dream’s Guild Fishing Event Sunday night…hooray!

The Mr. Pinchy Sitch

Posted by Miriella on 16 June 2007

You say you want one? Well here’s how I got it.  For a much more comprehensive and logical guide to fishing with much less commentary and digressions, try this guide (it helped me tons).

First things first, work your fishing up to 300ish. After 300ish, when you throw on an Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (made by engineers, sold by vendors as well, usually as limited supply), you can fish pretty much anywhere in Outland.  The deal is, you should have about 90-95 points over the minimum required level of fishing for the zone you’re in so you don’t tear your hair out in frustration that all your danged fish are getting away.  So if you’re in Zangarmarsh, where the fishing level is about 305 (last I checked), and your fishing is say, 310 – you should expect a lot of fish to get away from you.  But with bonuses, including fish bait, enchants, special gear, etc, you can give yourself the added boost, and then so many fish will not escape from you.  So make sure you always have fishing bait on you.  The bright shiny baubles that are readily purchasable (is that a word?) from fishing vendors and such give a boost of +75, which is a nice alternative if you can’t find an engineer or the mats or don’t want to pay absurd prices on the AH.

Also, you can definitely get buffs and bonuses to fishing in many other ways, including a +2 enchant to gloves and all the awards you can win during the Stranglethorn Fishing Contest that’s held every Sunday from 2-4 server time.  Since I work nearly every single Sunday, I’m never able to join in on the fun and try my hand at the fishing contest, so I’ve never been able to get myself better fishing gear.  Woe is me.

Anyway, at 300ish, start fishing in Zangarmarsh.  The lake around the Karazhan area is about 330, so with some bait, you can fish there too.  I only fished in Deadwind Pass a couple of times, and got strange fishy items before TBC released.  I haven’t gone back to see what kind of things I could get now, soooo…dunno.

You have a variety of options here – you can keep fishing your way up in Zangarmarsh til you hit 375, or you can start testing out different waters.  For me, at about 310 I started fishing in Nagrand, at Skysong Lake (at the Throne of Elements) and at the Elemental Plateau.  The big bonus to these waters is finding the globs of “pure water” – if you fish these, you get motes of water!  There’s also a chance overall in Nagrand (and Terokkar) that you will fish up motes of water, but each of those “pure water” globs can yield 5-7 motes on average.  Nice treat!  Also found in these waters here are the Figluster’s Mudfish and Icefin Bluefish – I have no idea what the mudfish gets cooked into, but it probably involves agility, since Loth always wants them.  The bluefish can become poached bluefish, which provides a buff of +23 spell damage and I think +20 spirit? – lovely for casters.

See? I digress.

Back to fishing.  I tried to start fishing in the Highland Mixed School ponds in Terokkar at 330 - but with a +20 fishing pole and the +100 bait, that only brought me to +450, and the lakes in Terokkar require a 430 effective skill – so I was having a LOT of fish escape from me – and that can get extremely frustrating even with a high tolerance for the mundane like I have.   Between 330 and 360, if I felt like a challenge and was in the mood, I’d go try my hand in Terokkar.  When I felt frustrated I’d go back to Nagrand - and it was always such a relief to go back and fish there.  Oh and just FYI, you need about 10-12 successful fish catches for every point from 300 on (the number increases with your skill level). At 360, armed with my graphite fishing pole in one hand and aquadynamic fish attractors in the other, I set off for Terokkar Forest and the Highland Mixed Schools.  My effective fishing level was 480, and with a cushion of +50, I felt very confident.    Keep in mind Mr. Pinchy is very rare.  The person who created the aforementioned guide clocked in a Mr. Pinchy at a little over 1000 catches, but thereafter fishing up a few more Mr. Pinchys and turning the average to about 1 in every 500; this person’s guide (another very helpful one) rates the catch rate at 0.2% also (yes that’s 1 in 500). While I could have waited and waited until 375 so less fish would escape, I felt my chances would be better over the course of time if I just started at 360, so I did.  The Highland Mixed Schools are great (and I think the only places) to catch Furious Crawdad and Golden Darters.  Over the last week I managed to fish up also a myriad of Inscribed Scrollcases (inside of which are a bunch of scrolls), lots of off-hand fish, a few Curious Crates (packed with Fel Iron Ore and Netherweave Cloth), and some motes of water as well.

I never sold off any of my fish I got, so I should go back and count how much fish I have – but I’m sure it’s around 400 fish (edit: it’s only about 200 fish, and a spattering of other crap from the crates and scrolls) - I definitely did better than the average time it took for me to fish up a Mr. Pinchy – Lady Luck was truly on my side.  Very much unlike my netherwing egg ordeal, and pretty much anything else I try to do in WoW – it always seems that I wind up having to go the long way for anything, so I’m so very happy for Mr. Pinchy coming to me so soon.

So: Highland Mixed Schools, found only in Terrokar Forest (I’m assuming, anyway, I haven’t looked anywhere else).  I’ll even be nice and list spawn points:

Blackwind Lake (at Skettis):
68,79
68,77
64,79
65,83
69,80
64,78
66,80
63,77
There’s apparently 10 locations…but I can’t find the other two.  Yet.

Lake Ere’Noru (just southeast of Allerian Stronghold):
58,60
60,59
58,58
58,61

Lake Jorune (just northeast of Stonebreaker Hold):
47,40
46,39
45,40ish, not fully confirmed, it hasn’t respawned yet and it’s 2am.  Confirm later.

Happy Fishing!

Hooray! Mr. Pinchy is mine!

Posted by Miriella on 15 June 2007

So, even though I was on the down low (yeah, I said it) and feeling a bit of burnout from my regular WoW activities – I still managed to sneak in a secret goal in the last couple of weeks – level Fishing to 375 and to get a Mr. Pinchy!  And I got them both!

mrpinchy.jpg

So he grants three wishes – and my first wish I got was the Magical Crawdad pet!  HOOORAY!!!!!!!

miriellacrawdad2.jpg

Isn’t he just adorable?  He IS about the same size as me…and he’s always got my back.  Literally.  Whichever way I face, he turns around and faces the other way.  Is that a bug? I don’t know.

I have a two day cooldown until my next wish, so until then…maybe I’ll start on my Skettis quests now.

RSS and Del.icio.us!

Posted by Miriella on 14 June 2007

Went to an all-day work shop at my library yesterday – it was all about RSS and Del.icio.us and crazy Web 2.0 things like that.  I often hear about this kind of stuff – heck I should KNOW what RSS is all about seeing as how I have a blog – but I didn’t.  Not til yesterday.  The web these days is all about the user – the user is in control – giving the user the ability to provide input and feedback, giving them control on the content of websites and how it looks.  People go to websites these days and expect to be able to interact with it and others who visit the same site.  Libraries these days especially have to be open to these new ways – we have to let our users get involved!

RSS feeds and Del.icio.us are just two of the zillions of ways for users to have control of what information comes to them, and how, and when, and where…it gives users complete control of how they find the information and how they want to organize information.  Del.icio.us is nothing but a crazy super bookmarking site that lets you save all your webpages you visit  – just like how you bookmark them on your computer and add them to your “favorites” – except this is web based, and of course, completely portable.  Not only can you bookmark your sites, but you tag them, file the tags, share the tags and the sites and see what others have bookmarked too.  If we’re careful with how we use and organize our sites on Del.icio.us – we (us librarians) can make this an amazingly powerful reference tool for our patrons.

More ways to organize all your information you’re bookmarking and saving – the biggies shown yesterday were http://www.google.com/ig and www.pageflakes.com – the latter REALLY catching my eye because you can copy and paste the code of each of the little widgets and use them on your own site.  Both of these sites are incredibly user-friendly and allow for extremely high customizable options.

Libraries are also starting to provide RSS feeds on their catalogs – which is just super!  Waiting to see when your library gets a new title in by your favorite author?  An RSS feed will plop it right in your inbox or your igoogle homepage when it does.

Examples: Hennepin County Library – their catalog is really cutting edge: http://www.hclib.org/pub/search/rss.cfm – and the Phoenix Public Library: http://www.phoenixpubliclibrary.org/ - does that even LOOK like a typical library website to you?

It’s just amazing stuff, and I hope that all libraries will soon embrace this technology that most users have come to expect.

Burn Out :s

Posted by Miriella on 14 June 2007

Feeling burnout from crazy netherdrakeyness + school work – so I’m taking the slow easy route these days.  Trying to enjoy the small window of pure freedom before school starts up again on June 25th.  On the bright side, I’ve managed to level up my fishing all the way up to 370, and hope to get to 375 maybe tonight.  And I have more fish than I know what to do with.  I’ve been fishing in the areas around Skettis – where the nether ray work is – and frick, it’s annoying to fly around and get harassed by the stupid birds there.  They couldn’t just hit you?  They have to DAZE you too and knock you off your mount?  Yeah.  So far Skettis is just plain old irritating to me.  I’ll have to get extra inspired soon to get the nether ray mount.

P.S. Happy Birthday Clevins!

Just an update

Posted by Miriella on 11 June 2007

Been chugging at away at my final projects so I haven’t gotten started on the Nether Ray stuff (which started off as – and still is - utterly confusing to me, but I guess that’s another story) – finished my project for my cataloging class, and I have just a few more updates for my website for that class.  Thought I’d give an update since I’ve been away – minus the Toto thing – congratulations to Emerald Dream for two firsts – downing the Curator and the Chess Event in Karazhan last night!  I am honored to have been part of the team.

On a random note…

Posted by Miriella on 7 June 2007

Need your Toto fix? I know I do.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I blessed the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I blessed the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I blessed the rains down in Africa, I blessed the rains down in Africa
I blessed the rains down in Africa, I blessed the rains down in Africa
I blessed the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

I am a sucker.  And the Nether Rays look ABSURDLY cute and silly to ride on…

So…gnome on a ray, here we come.  It’s all your fault Clevins!!!  I definitely won’t be working as intensely on this one though.
